Artificial Intelligence (AI): is this amazing technology that we need to implement absolutely everywhere, or a boogeyman that could spell the end of humanity? According to professor Nava Tintarev, the truth lies in the middle. “AI is a powerful tool that we can use responsibly if we know its shortcomings.” Knowing shortcomings is tricky, however, as AI models continue to elude human understanding. As professor of Explainable Artificial Intelligence, Tintarev is working to change that paradigm.

Nava Tintarev is a Full Professor of Explainable Artificial Intelligence in the Department of Advanced Computing Sciences (DACS) where she is also the Director of Research. She has designed and evaluated explanation interfaces in a wide range of domains (music, human resources, legal enforcement, nature conservation, logistics, and online search), machine learning tasks (recommender systems, classification, search ranking, and neural networks); and modalities (text, graphics, and combinations thereof). She is particularly interested in how recommender systems work in (social, news, and entertainment) media, and has actively collaborated with industry partners such as RTL, Blendle, FDMediaGroep, IBM, and Twitter. She has published around 100 peer-reviewed papers on human-computer interaction in artificial advice-giving systems, such as recommender systems; specifically developing the state-of-the-art for automatically generated explanations (transparency) and explanation interfaces (recourse and control).
