Join us for an evening of microbes, medicine and innovative science at the Cafe Rose! Discover how antibiotic resistance is changing the way we treat sexually transmitted infections and why this matters for all of us. Then, we will step into the lab of the future where we learn how a fallopian tube-on-a-chip model can revolutionize the way we research the human body. Expect exciting talks by two renowned scientists, coming from our very own Maastricht University!

Shots, Not Just at the Bar: Treating STDs in 2026

Dr. Petra Wolffs (Medical Molecular Microbiologist & Associate Professor, Maastricht UMC+ )
In this short presentation by Petra Wolffs we will discuss the impact of antimicrobial resistance on the treatment of STDs and how current guidelines in some cases focus on less treatment of STDs instead of more treatment. Petra is a medical molecular microbiologist and associate professor with a research interest in the areas of STDs and mechanisms and detection of antimicrobial resistance.  In recent years she has focused on developing and using innovative diagnostic strategies to study both antimicrobial resistance as well as STDs. She is the project leader of the Dutch national reference laboratory for Chlamydia trachomatis.

The Lab of the Future: Fallopian Tubes on a Chip

Dr. Paul Wieringa (Assistant Professor, Complex Tissue Engineering Department, Maastricht University)
In this presentation Dr. Paul Wieringa will take you right into the lab: what are organ-on-a-chip models and how can they revolutionize the way we research the human body? With years of experience in neural and regenerative medicine applications, he leads a team developing innovative organ-on-a-chip models. He will present to you the Fallopian tube-on-a-chip, the OviChip, giving us a unique perspective on Chlamydia infection and related human biological processes. Discover how these models are revolutionizing the way we study the human body!
