The neuroscience of addiction - modelling alcohol use disorder in rodents

Nathan Marchant (Assistant Professor at Amsterdam UMC)
About the speaker: Nathan Marchant is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anatomy & Neurosciences at Amsterdam UMC. He completed his PhD in the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia, and was a post-doc researcher at the National Institute on Drug Abuse, in the USA. His research models the addictive state using rodent task to study different aspects of drug and alcohol addiction, and neuroscience techniques to explain how brain function causes addiction.

About the talk: While the majority of individuals in our society are able to have a few drinks and leave it at that, a subset of people come to find it very difficult to impossible to stop their alcohol intake. In these individuals, and alcohol addiction develops which can lead to serious health and social consequences. In this talk Nathan will give an overview of the different stages of the addiction cycle, and how we model them in the laboratory. To understand how the brain responds to alcohol, and cues that predict alcohol rewards, he will present a series of studies designed to identify activity in the brain that is related to the formation of alcohol memories, and for making the decision to choose alcohol over other, health non-alcohol rewards.

Sex and gender differences in the working mechanisms underlying addiction

Anne Marije Kaag (Assistant Professor)
About the speaker: Anne Marije Kaag is assistant professor at the department of clinical neuropsychology at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, and head of the sex and gender in addiction lab.

About the talk: Although women, transgender, and gender-diverse individuals constitute a substantial portion of those affected by substance use disorders, they are frequently overlooked in addiction-related research. As a result, our understanding of the mechanisms driving the development and treatment of these disorders predominantly relies on data from cisgender males. Through diverse methodologies, including neuroimaging and qualitative interviews, the Sex and Gender in Addiction Lab (SAGA Lab) endeavors to elucidate sex and gender differences in the mechanisms underlying substance use disorders. By doing so, we aim pave the way for a more gender-sensitive approach to addiction care.
