From sputting ketchup bottles to soft robot - Bas Overvelde (TU/e, AMOLF)
Bas Overvelde researches soft robots, while utilising elastic and ‘intelligent’ materials. Soft robots offer a solution for places where robots have to handle vulnerable objects, like fruits or in the human body. One of the projects of Overvelde is the development of a synthetic heart, which works in a more natural way than current electronic hearts. Analysing how a nearly empty ketchup bottle sputters led to the idea of building reflexes in soft robotic bodies and creating a heartbeat without the need for traditional hard electronics.

Will soccer robots beat the human world champions in 2050? - Team Tech United (TU/e)
To promote robotics and AI research, the RoboCup organization was founded with the ultimate goal of autonomous soccer robots defeating the human world champions in 2050. Teams from all over the world are developing their robots and sharing their knowledge by participating in the annual RoboCup event, which comprises leagues in several domains: RoboCupSoccer, RoboCupRescue, RoboCup@Home, RoboCupJunior and RoboCupIndustrial. This year’s event will be hosted in Eindhoven from July 17 to 21. Team Tech United from the Eindhoven University of Technology will participate with their soccer robots and service robot. In this talk, we will show how Tech United contributes to RoboCup’s goal and give a sneak peek into what to expect at RoboCup 2024.

Tiny Wonders, Mighty Precision: Helping Microsurgeons excel through Robotics - Theodosia Thomas & Piyush Alexander (Microsure)
Microsurgery is a delicate and demanding intervention in which surgeons rely on exceptional dexterity, maneuverability, and unwavering steadiness to achieve optimal results. They need to operate the smallest anatomical structures (at sub-millimeter scales) accurately. This talk explores the exciting potential of robotic assistance in microsurgery. MUSA-3, a microsurgical robot developed by a team of surgeons and engineers at Microsure can act as an extension of the surgeon's skillset. We delve into the fascinating journey of developing a dedicated robotic platform for microsurgery, taking you from inception to its introduction in clinical settings. Join us to discover how MUSA-3 paves the way for a future where surgeons are empowered to achieve even greater precision and push the boundaries of what’s possible.
